Speaking at the closing ceremonies of a 93 day convention called “The Living Ocean and Coast”, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced the launch of a new strategic plan, the “Oceans Compact”, to achieve the UN’s mandate regarding the ocean and help countries deliver on their commitments and obligations.

This week the European Commission (EC) announced the 2012 quota deductions for Member States that landed more fish than they were meant to in 2011. This is intended to quickly correct for overfishing, which can damage the sustainability and profitability of stocks, and provide an incentive for Member States to ensure they fish within their quotas.
